Endometriosis is a common disease whereby the inner lining tissue of the uterus implants and grows outside of the uterus and sometimes in the muscular layer of the uterus. The latter is called adenomyosis.
Endometriosis may be associated with infertility and it may also cause pelvic pain and cysts in the ovaries. The severity of pain is not related to the extent of the disease, even minimal amount of disease could result in excruciating cyclic pain.
