The Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes department of Koç University Hospital serves inpatients and outpatients in all respective fields of pediatric endocrinology with a team of 5 people in total, which consists of two academicians, 1 endocrinology/diabetes nurse, 1 dietitian and 1 psychologist. Associate Prof. Eda Cengiz, M.D., a visiting fellow from Yale University School of Medicine’s department of Pediatric Endocrinology, also contributes to the department. Our polyclinic reaches out to 400 patients on average monthly and is capable of performing all endocrinological tests. Follow-ups are supervised by the same physician to the extent possible by taking family members’ requests into consideration. The team regularly gathers together with specialists of Medical Genetics, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Mental Health and Neonatology at the “Sexual Developmental Differences/Disorders Council”.
Our department offers services for children between the ages of 0 and 18 in the following fields:
- Adolescence problems and management of delayed/early adolescence
- Height and developmental deficiency, bone age evaluation with BonExpert
- All aspects of diabetes and its treatment, diagnosis of MODY and other genetic diabetic conditions
- Obesity
- Vitamin D deficiency and assessment
- Thyroid gland diseases (evaluation of thyroid functions, goiter and thyroid nodules, congenital hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, hyperthyroidism)
- Pediatric bone diseases (Rickets/rachitism, osteoporosis and osteogenesis imperfecta-glass bone disease) and parathyroid gland disorders
- Diseases of the hypophyseal gland
- Hypoglycemia (low blood glucose)
- Irregular menstruation and hirsutism (increased hair growth)
- Polycystic ovarian syndrome
- Adrenal gland diseases
- Sexual development problems
- Lipid disorders and elevated cholesterol
