Has graduated from Hacettepe University Medical School in 1985. Completed urology residency at Hacettepe University Medical School between 1988-1992. Visited Mayo Clinic in 1994 and did clinical fellowship in urooncology at UTMD Anderson Cancer Center between 1996-1999. Assumed the titles of Assoc. Professorship in 1999 and Professorship in 2008.
Prof. Derya Balbay, M.D. performed reconstruction of a new bladder from small intestines with fully robotic and closed method for the first time in Turkey. He also performed excision of ureter, urinary bladder and lymph nodes and reconstruction of a new bladder from small intestines in the same session with fully robotic technique for the first time in the world. Furthermore he has received M.D. Anderson Cancer Center "Distinguished Alumnus" Award in 2019.
